Safe and seen on Halloween

More News

This story originally appeared in the Tuesday, October 25, 2005 edition of The Kansas City Star

A poisoned Halloween treat might top your worry list, but such cases are actually very uncommon. On the other hand, your child is four times more likely to be fatally injured by a motor vehicle on this holiday than any other day of the year. To protect your princess or superhero:

Add reflective tape to costumes and trick-or-treat bags, and give your child a flashlight.

Walk together on sidewalks, if available, and cross only at corners and pedestrian walkways.

Leave bikes, skateboards and skates at home.

Be sure that costumes aren't too long, shoes fit well and masks don't make it hard to see (or breathe!).
