    Flame on for burger cook-off

Speaking of burgers, the National Agricultural Hall of Fame is getting its beef on Saturday with “A Salute to Hamburgers.”

“May is National Beef Month, so we thought let’s try something different and see what happens,” said Tim Daugherty, executive director of the Ag Hall at 630 N. 126th in Bonner Springs.

The party’s main event is a Hamburger Cook-Off open to anyone regardless of age or experience, providing he, she or they bring a personal grill and fixings. Prizes will be awarded to three finalists, and there are no categories.

“The judges may go by taste, originality or how they present it,” he said. “We just want them to turn them loose and have fun with it.”

Each participant will be given about 2 pounds of beef, which should translate to roughly six to eight burgers. The deadline to enter is today so the Ag Hall has some time to determine just how much beef will be needed.

The Salute runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and includes children’s activities, information booths and trivia contests with questions like how many basketballs can be made out of the skin of a cow, and when were hamburgers as we know them today first introduced.

The Hall of Fame itself will be open with its attractions Farm Town USA, a miniature train ride and the new bee exhibit, “World’s Smallest Farmers.”

Admission is $7, or $6 for seniors, $5 for students, $3 for children ages 5 to 16 or free to children under 5. To apply for the cook-off or for more information, see www.aghalloffame.com or call 913-721-1075.
