Fans of Jim’s Fat Burger on Prospect, rejoice: The daughter of founder Jim Reed is grilling up a reincarnation of her daddy’s trademark juicy beef burger in the historic 18th and Vine jazz district, which is a lot closer to get to for workers in both downtown Kansas Citys.
Knockout Chicken Fish is the name of the establishment where Sherri Holden runs the kitchen for owner Antonio Bradshaw. It’s a clean, airy but sparsely decorated room with plenty of tables if you feel like dining in.
As the name implies, Knockout serves wings and fried fish. The basa sandwich is the best I’ve had in a long time and definitely worth the drive no matter where you live, but at $5.50 it is just over the price target of this column.
The good news is, a fiver buys you a really great hand-formed, fat burger and side of fries. Add 50 cents for a cheeseburger with fries.
The third-of-a-pound burger comes with your choice of raw or grilled onions, pickles, lettuce, tomato (which Sherri advises against: “makes the bread wet”) and mayo, ketchup and mustard. The white Wonder Bread bun is buttered and grilled to a pleasing crispness.
Because fat burgers take longer to cook than smashed-flat ones, be prepared to wait 10 minutes or call in your order in advance.
Be sure to check out the hand-lettered signs at the ordering window promoting the homemade desserts of the day. On a recent visit, strawberry cake and peach cobbler were on offer, and both were memorable.
Knockout closes at 5:30 so it’s not really a dinner destination, but it works perfectly for grabbing a bite after work before heading to one of the neighborhood watering holes and music venues such as Danny’s Big Easy or the Blue Room.
Or, it’s a nice finish to an afternoon visit to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and the American Jazz Museum.Fast and cheap
