Colby and Megan Garrelts, the owners of Westport's Bluestem, will open a new restaurant called Rye this fall in Leawood.
Rye is scheduled to open in mid-October in Mission Farms, 10551 Mission Road. Lakeside Tavern closed in the spot Saturday night.
The Garrelts said they wanted to celebrate their Midwest heritage so Rye will play homage to dishes that they have enjoyed with several generations in their families — smoked pork chops, fried chicken, aged steaks, baby back ribs, Parker House rolls, seasonal pies and fruit cobblers, and icebox cakes — traditional dishes but with a "chef's point of view."
They will use locally sourced ingredients, including produce from their family farm called Flat Rock Field in Parker, Kan.
Many dishes will come in three sizes — for just a taste or enough for a large group to share.
They also will serve wines, spirits and beers from Missouri and Kansas, an assortment of cocktails, including "regionally inspired" moonshine cocktails.
Rye will be open for dinner daily. Lunch will be served on weekdays with brunch on Saturday and Sunday.
The Garrelts opened Bluestem in March 2004 and have since received many honors, including top food rankings from Zagat Survey and nominations from the James Beard Foundation.
They tested the Leawood waters by operating Trezo Vino in Park Place for a period and were in negotiations to take over the space and open Native 34 restaurant there, but Trezo Vino closed earlier this year and lease negotiations fell through.
The Garrelts then began negotiating for the Mission Farms space, which has a outdoor patio overlooking a small "lake." The lease was signed Saturday.
