Kansas City’s Big Slick celebrities are featured in so many new movie trailers this season, they’re driving a veritable convoy through Hollywood:
Stonestreet’s “Pet” project
In an adorable holiday teaser for the animated “The Secret Life of Pets,” KCK’s Eric Stonestreet voices Duke, an oversized mutt. Other voice stars include Kevin Hart, Louis C.K. and Lake Bell in this revealing tale of what our critters do after we leave for work or school. It’s due July 8. Here’s the new holiday greeting:
And here’s the original trailer (but no sign of Duke in this one):
Sudeikis on track
“Race” is a biopic of black track star Jesse Owens (Stephan James of “Selma”) and his rise to the 1936 Berlin Olympics, where he could thumb his nose at Hitler’s Aryan hogwash. And look who is Owens’ fedora-topped coach: Overland Park’s Jason Sudeikis. It arrives Feb. 19.
Meanwhile in the animated “Angry Birds,” billed as an origin story to the video game, Sudeikis voices Red, a bird with a temper whose island paradise is invaded by mysterious green piggies. It flies in May 20. Here’s the silly new holiday greeting from the hatchlings:
And here’s Sudeikis as Red on his bird island:
Overland Park’s Paul Rudd is one of the many celebrity voices in “The Little Prince,” an animated new spin on Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s classic children’s story. Rachel McAdams voices the overbearing mother of a little girl (Mackenzie Foy of “Twilight”) who makes friends with an old pilot (Jeff Bridges) and gets swept up in his tales of a little prince from a faraway asteroid. Rudd voices a teenage version of the boy. The film played at this spring’s Cannes Film Festival but won’t hit U.S. theaters until March 18.
Then there’s Chris Evans’ “Captain America: Civil War,” opening May 6. We know Rudd reprises his role of Ant-Man in this Marvel Avengers movie — guess he’s just too small to see in the new trailer.
Koechner vs. Krampus
Christmas is getting mighty scary with the holiday horror comedy “Krampus,” opening Friday. Adam Scott and Toni Collette are the harried parents of a little boy (Emjay Anthony) who, in a bit of a tantrum, accidentally summons a Christmas demon to their home.
Bonus: David Koechner plays a nasty relative who gets his comeuppance when he’s dragged through the snow. (Despite all those jerk roles he’s cast in, we hear he’s a great guy!) Koechner, who grew up in Tipton, Mo., and has family around KC, will perform standup at Kansas City Improv in Zona Rosa from Dec. 10 to 13. Tickets at improvkc.com.
Overland Park’s Rob Riggle recently got cast in “Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life,” based on the James Patterson novels. He’ll play the boyfriend of a mom (Lauren Graham of “Gilmore Girls”) whose son is coping with bullies, hormones and a tyrannical school principal. It’s due Oct. 7. It’s too early for a sneak peek at that. And the trailer for September’s “Hotel Transylvania 2” doesn’t really show him in his role as Bela the bad bat. So content yourself with a couple of the hilarious song parodies Riggle performed recently for his gig on Fox NFL Sunday.
