Head outdoors for family movies on the cheap

Summer is the time to enjoy the silver screen under the stars. Grab lawn chairs, blankets, snacks and the kids to watch these inexpensive (and usually free) movies outside, with music and other entertainment as a bonus.

Crown Center: At the “WeekEnder,” listen to local bands, shop KC artisans and conclude your Fridays with a movie at Crown Center Square, 2450 Grand Blvd. Activities start at 5 p.m., music at 6 p.m. and the movie at 9 p.m.: “Mean Girls,” July 11; “The Sandlot,” July 18; “Star Trek,” July 25; “The Wizard of Oz,” Aug. 1; “Jaws,” Aug. 8. Hyde Park: This Children’s Film Festival offers a movie along with a youth band and kids’ educational activity at Hyde Park, 36th Street and Gillham Road. Concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. and movies begin at 8:30 p.m. on Fridays in June: “Frozen,” June 6; “Epic,” June 13; “Thor: The Dark World,” June 20; “The Lego Movie,” June 27. Admission is free.
