If the “Terminator Genisys” robots are a bit too intense, “Robot Overlords” offers a slightly more family-friendly alternative. In this low-budget adventure from British director Jon Wright, alien androids have invaded and established a strict worldwide curfew. But four plucky kids in a British seaside town find a way to fight back.
Gillian Anderson plays one of the moms, and Ben Kingsley is a conniving collaborator. Critics are mixed:
▪ Guy Lodge, Variety: “The pic’s general good humor — plus the tony adult presence of Gillian Anderson and Ben Kingsley — compensates to some degree for its cheapjack construction, but not enough to extend its appeal far beyond preteens in (England).”
▪ Leslie Felperin, The Hollywood Reporter: “Surprises are few and far between, but what makes it a bit better than average compared to other live-action kids’ films is the jaunty banter … and the palpable sense of fun, despite the dystopian trappings.”
▪ Rebecca Hawkes, London Telegraph: “With all this over-the-top Britishness, it would be nice to champion ‘Robot Overlords’ as a home-grown alternative to flashier U.S. sci-fi fare. Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of its cast, the film just isn’t that good.”
