It’s almost time to ring out the old and ring in the new … year, that is.
Of course, some folks will want to cling to the Royals’ world-championship year as long as possible. But maybe the Royals will win another World Series in 2016. And maybe the Chiefs will win the Super Bowl.
And maybe even the 2016 elections will inspire us to great heights . Maybe no politicians will attack one another and no candidates will make us doubt the wisdom of our system of democracy.
That’s the thing about a new year: It’s full of promise. And even delusions can come true.
Never miss a local story.
So this New Year’s Eve, while you’re out celebrating the final hours of 2015, make a toast to the hope that 2016 brings.
Or just stay home and lock yourself in a closet. Whatever works.
Just remember, you won’t get another shot at 2015.
Noon Year’s Eve Bash
The Noon Year’s Eve Bash at Science City is the right idea at the right place at the right time. Rather than limiting New Year’s Eve functions to depraved evening revelries for adults, the Noon Year’s Eve Bash at Science City allows visitors to celebrate the holiday as a family-friendly educational forum during the daylight hours. In addition to all of the regular attractions at Science City, the seven-hour function starting at noon includes science demonstrations, an animal exhibition, science-themed stage shows and a balloon drop.
Admission is $13.50 for adults and $11.50 for children at unionstation.org/sciencecity.
Countdown at the Corner
People partial to adult beverages will congregate near 31st Street and Gillham Road. About 19 blocks removed from the large-scale glitz of the downtown entertainment district, the substantially subtler Countdown at the Corner gathering will act as a fashionable party for in-the-know celebrants. The wait staff at the six participating establishments — Sol Cantina, Tower’s Tavern, Ollie’s Local, the Drop, Barrel 31 and the Empire Room — will pour unlimited drinks for people who have purchased wristbands. Champagne toasts will be served at midnight at the chic taverns.
Tickets are $65-$85 at countdownatthecorner.com.
Kansas City’s Biggest New Year’s Eve Party
Power & Light District
With a countdown-to-midnight ball drop, confetti cannons and champagne toasts, the elaborate spectacle in the Power & Light District is a deliberate attempt to replicate the glittering festivities associated with Times Square in New York. Musicians will perform on the KC Live! stage, while other entertainers will be featured in some of the venues that line the district. The Dubliner and McFadden’s Sports Saloon are among the establishments participating in inclusive drink packages.
Tickets are $60-$135 at nye-live.com.
The Conquerors, Various Blonde, Jaenki
On almost any other night, the rock bands that will perform at the RecordBar on New Year’s Eve would be the primary attraction. Most of the people at the venue, however, will bask in the memories that were made in the room over the last 10 years. A show the following Saturday will be the final event at the venue’s current location. Three bands will provide the soundtrack for the RecordBar’s nostalgic regulars. The Conquerors, one of Kansas City’s best garage-rock bands, recently released an excellent 7-inch single. Locally based Various Blonde makes cutting-edge psychedelic rock. Jaenki is a new trio consisting of members of the Republic Tigers, Vedera and Heroes + Villains.
Tickets are $10 in advance at therecordbar.com.
Although a lot of people prefer to bask in the comforts of home on New Year’s Eve, regulars of Knuckleheads are likely to insist that the establishment is their home away from home. The down-home decor and the personable staff at the roots music emporium in the East Bottoms create an atmosphere that often resembles the proverbial place “where everybody knows your name.” The New Year’s lineup is highlighted by the powerful one-two punch of Samantha Fish and Katy Guillen & the Girls. Both blues-rock ensembles had breakout years in 2015. The Rainmakers, one of Kansas City’s most successful rock bands, journeyman ensemble the Nace Brothers and Talking Heads tribute band Found a Job round out the bill.
Tickets are $90 in advance at knuckleheadskc.com.

New Year’s Eve White Party
Even though the celebration at the Madrid Theatre is billed as the “craziest New Year’s Eve party in Kansas City,” considerate partiers will think twice before ordering red wine at the open bars. Their fellow celebrants will be dressed in white, a fashion statement that will make Merlots and Cabernet Sauvignons dangerous propositions. The high ceilings of the Madrid will be put to full use by aerial performers. DJ Kidd will keep the dance floor filled with an upbeat mix of electronic dance music. And the party planners have made the audacious claim that there will be “zero bar lines” at their event.
Tickets are $25-$55 at kansascity-newyearseve.com.
One by One Roaring Twenties Party
Hillcrest Country Club
New Year’s Eve is a night when it’s socially acceptable to cast inhibitions aside. Even so, participation in a lavish celebration needn’t be entirely indulgent. The Second Annual Give Hope to One New Year’s Eve Party allows participants to enjoy music, drink and food while contributing to a worthwhile cause. Dedicated to “eradicating sex trafficking one person and one community at a time,” the One by One Project has organized an all-inclusive fundraising party. The “Great Gatsby”-themed party includes an open bar, dinner, a dessert bar, a photo booth and entertainment from a band and a DJ in a tony country club setting.
Tickets are $125 at onebyoneproject.org.
Freight Train Rabbit Killer, Monzie Leo and the Big Sky, Calamity Cubes
Music lovers on a budget will find a welcome refuge at the Westport Saloon. T-shirts and jeans rather than gaudy jewelry and formal wear will be the preferred attire at the informal venue that’s billed as “ground zero for the Kansas City roots scene.” Three sets of locally based musicians will entertain. The members of Freight Train Rabbit Killer perform demented Tom Waits-inspired blues while wearing eerie masks. Monzie Leo and the Big Sky specialize in unhinged old-timey music. The Calamity Cubes may make an exception to their usual repertoire of songs about “love, drinking and murder” to perform “Auld Lang Syne” at midnight.
Admission is free. More info at westportsaloon.com.
New Year’s Eve Bash
Kansas City pop-punk trio the Beautiful Bodies has cultivated an international reputation as a mainstay of the Warped Tour. The notoriously grueling environment — obstacles include a relentless tour schedule, shows under an unforgiving sun and direct competition from simultaneous performances on nearby stages — has further honed the band’s live show. The concert in the comfortable confines of the Uptown Theater, consequently, represents the lap of luxury for the trio. Partygoers will have plenty of options at the sprawling Uptown Theater complex. In addition to open bars, five rooms will offer a variety of sounds and atmospheres.
