As a woman buying her first home, Taryn Glidewell wanted her place to be comfortable and inviting to herself and friends. The flipped house she purchased in KCK just needed some choice paint colors and a few personal touches. She could live with the carpeting — not her first choice, but it definitely contributes to the cozy factor.
With help from her handy DIY family, Taryn has created a Pinterest-worthy home with little expense. Nearly everything inside was given to her — art made by friends, objects passed down by family — and it all presents itself as a charming mashup of Taryn’s life.
“I don’t think there’s a word for my style,” Taryn says. “Everything tells a story. Nothing matches or goes together, and it’s all barely hanging on, but I like it.”
Taryn always has a home improvement project in mind, and she has found a way to pay for it: Airbnb, the website that connects travelers wanting unique accommodations with homeowners seeking bonus income.
“It’s paying for things I wanted to do anyway,” Taryn says. “I’m just getting to do them more quickly.”
For Taryn, welcoming strangers to stay in a spare bedroom has been a mostly positive experience. “I like to meet people from all over,” says Taryn, who does her own fair share of traveling. It has also been a rather profitable endeavor. The anticipation of guests helps her keep her house consistently clean and uncluttered, and her central location and homey environment appeal to guests. “It’s dead in January, and there’s a lull in August, but the holidays are bonkers,” Taryn says.
Her most recent labor of love is landscaping. She has planted divisions from friends and family and added outdoor living space both on the front porch and back deck. The scenes are perfectly coiffed and ready for anyone to use. Now all Taryn needs is more time to be a guest in her own home.
