Ben Heisler and Elena Hermanson’s engagement nearly began without the ring and with an arrest.
The Overland Park couple found the ring while shopping in Omaha. Heisler secretly arranged to have it shipped to her parents’ home immediately before the big proposal on July 1. He carefully planned every detail — a photographer would capture the moment at the Ewing and Muriel Kauffman Memorial Garden and their parents would be waiting at a restaurant afterward.
There was only one hitch: FedEx needed a signature for the ring.
“Her dad had to miss a funeral the next day to wait for the ring,” Heisler says.
Never miss a local story.
That was one catastrophe avoided.
Heisler knew exactly how to seal the deal at the garden.
“We had discussed a summer bucket list including visiting and taking pictures at as many of the Kansas City fountains as we could,” he says. “I told her our reservations were on the later side so we could go visit a few fountains before dinner.”
His friend Brad Boeck was there with a camera to secretly capture the moment.
Heisler, 28, on-air talent and executive producer for “The Drive” on 610 Sports Radio, guided Hermanson, a 29-year-old special education teacher, to the planned spot by one of the garden’s fountains just in time to see a security guard talking to the Boeck.
“I then remember in horror the sign when we first walked in,” Heisler says. “No photography allowed on garden premises.”
Eventually the guard left and they headed back to the spot. Hermanson stopped to take a video for Snapchat.
“Can I do this?” Heisler texted Boeck.
“GO GO GO GO,” Boeck responded.
Heisler dropped to one knee.
“I had no idea,” Hermanson says.
“She said yes with tears streaming down her smiling face,” Heisler says. “The surprise with the ring and with our families couldn’t have gone any better.”
“And more importantly, nobody got arrested.”
They plan to marry next summer.
