Get ready, Kansas City! ‘Tis the season for traditions and events. When filling your holiday calendar, the choices can be overwhelming. We turned to Crown Center for some top picks.
Crown Center Ice Terrace
Never miss a local story.
Ice skating is one of those winter traditions that’ll leave you feeling like a kid regardless of your age. My friends and I love getting together and laughing as we swirl—and inevitably fall. The Ice Terrace is KC’s only public outdoor ice-skating rink. Regular admission is just $6 and those who don’t own their own skates can rent a pair for $3. Hours at the rink are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Santa’s Arrival at Crown Center
Santa Claus is coming to town…in a horse drawn carriage at that. Welcome the man of the hour on Black Friday at 10 a.m. and kick off the holiday season with pictures and a trip through Gingerbread Station, Santa’s KC home, baked by the pastry chef of the Sheraton and Westin Hotels at Crown Center. If you’d like a meet and greet with old Saint Nick, stop in for a visit by Dec. 24. After that, Santa returns to the North Pole for a very busy night ahead of him.
The Mayor’s Christmas Tree Lighting
Join Mayor Sly James and Jake Reid of Sporting KC at Crown Center Square on Nov. 24 for the annual tree lighting ceremony. The 100-foot-tall tree is one of the tallest in the nation and will be repurposed into commemorative ornaments sold next year to benefit The Mayor’s Christmas Tree Fund. The (completely free!) ceremony kicks off at 5:30 p.m. and is followed by a spectacular firework display. Dress warm!
We all have that couple—or dozen—people on our list that we simply don’t know what to get. Crown Center is the best way to find comfortable indoor shopping of the KC brands you love, plus unique gift ideas. Sweets and Treats
Is it even the holidays without indulging in loads of sweets? Candy canes are cool and all, but Chip’s Chocolate Factory is my choice for holiday indulging. Stop in to try this sweet and creamy fudge that might contest grandma’s. Made from Swiss Chocolate, this fudge is intended for veteran and novice chocoholics.
