Here’s the cold, hard truth, Chiefs fans: No amount of yelling at the players, whether you’re perched on a stadium seat, a bar stool or your couch at home, is going to affect the outcome of the game.
You can certainly try. You can hold your beer in your left hand for the entirety of the third quarter. You can force everyone in your party to maintain their positions, since that worked so well for the last touchdown. Do what you feel you must, but the reality is that it’s all for naught. Que sera, sera, and all that.
What you can do, however, is make sure that KC pride is just as evident in your attire as it is in your attitude. We scouted local brands such as Charlie Hustle Clothing Co., Bellboy Apparel and Made Urban Apparel for the best new tailgating duds, and, well, you have no excuse not to look phenomenal this season. Here’s how to take your game day outfit to the next level.
“Kansas City is for hustlers” T-shirt
Never miss a local story.
Short, sweet and to the point — Kansas City is for hustlers. Of course we already knew that, but it’s nice to show everyone else too. This gray shirt with red lettering is an exclusive collaboration between Charlie Hustle and Westside Storey, although other color schemes are available at charliehustleshop.com. Made with 50 percent combed cotton and 50 percent polyester, this tee comes in unisex sizes extra small to extra large.
$32 at Westside Storey, 1701 Summit St. or thewestsidestorey.com
Arrowhead Stadium T-shirt
You surely know by now that Arrowhead is the loudest stadium, but did you know it has been in use since 1972? This Charlie Hustle tee pays tribute to the first game played in Arrowhead Stadium in an off-white blend that’s just as classic as the field itself. The officially licensed shirt is available wherever Charlie Hustle gear is sold — which now includes a new pop-up shop at 419 W. 47th St. on the Country Club Plaza. Sizes range from extra small to double XL.

KC pennant sweatshirt
From the owners of Westside Storey, Bellboy Apparel is all about a vintage feel, and this varsity sweatshirt in cranberry is no exception. Throw it on over a T-shirt for those early fall days, or layer it under a denim or leather jacket when the temperatures really start to drop. (It’s a relaxed slim fit, so it shouldn’t be too bulky.) Unisex sizes range from extra small to extra large.

Janesko KC necklace
The reality of fan gear is that T-shirts are aplenty; fine jewelry, however, is not. This necklace from Janesko, a lifestyle brand created by Jennifer Janesko, is the perfect finishing touch for a game day outfit. It comes in plated 22 karat polished yellow gold or polished sterling silver, both options on a 20-inch chain. It’s sold at Made in Kansas City stores and online. Call ahead if you plan to buy it in a store, because not all Made in Kansas City locations carry the same merchandise.
$75 at Made in Kansas City (madeinkc.co), which has locations at 4155 N. Mulberry Drive, 8231 Corinth Mall in Prairie Village and 5501 W. 135th St. in Overland Park
Kansas City canvas tote
Don’t be the person who shows up empty-handed to a tailgate. This Ampersand Design Studio canvas tote with metallic gold lettering allows you to show off your Kansas City pride while being practical, whether you’re packing food, alcohol, a blanket or all of the above. FYI, the tote is also sold at Made in Kansas City stores.
$42.50 at Ampersand Design Studio, ampersanddesignstudio.com
Made Urban Apparel’s signature “xKCx” styles are more streetwear than fan gear, but that’s what makes the designs so undeniably cool. If red isn’t your color, try this lightweight pullover hoodie for $40. Sizes small through large are available on Made’s website. (Extra large is currently sold out.)
$40 at Made Urban Apparel, madeurbanapparel.com
xKCx “Dad Hat”
We’d be remiss if we didn’t also include Made’s “Dad Hat,” which is available in denim, navy, red and white. It’s unstructured with an adjustable fabric closure in the back, factors that are apparently reminiscent of fathers, but we think it’s suitable for everyone. One size fits all, so no need to worry about getting the wrong size.
$35 at Made Urban Apparel, madeurbanapparel.com
“Kegger at my mom’s house” onesie
Trust Charlie Hustle to craft something so quintessentially Kansas City. When Paul Rudd announced a “kegger at my mom’s house” after the Royals clinched a spot in the 2014 World Series, he didn’t really expect people to show up (although a few did). He probably didn’t expect the phrase to show up on a onesie either, but here we are. Stock up on these tiny T-shirts and you’re done baby shower shopping for a long time.
The onesie, available in black and gray, is another exclusive collaboration between Charlie Hustle and Westside Storey.
$25 at Westside Storey or thewestsidestorey.com
Big Red Tee
It’s never a bad time to pay some homage to Chiefs coach Andy Reid — and his magnificent mustache. Be prepared to make new friends while wearing this shirt; the oversized “Big Red” text, as well as Reid’s mug in the middle, is a surefire conversation starter. This unisex T-shirt, which fits slimmer for men and longer for women, comes in sizes extra small through extra large.
