Just thinking out loud here, but wouldn’t you say it’s probably never a good idea to quote Hitler outside of a history book? That’s a lesson that one Alabama children’s ministry has learned in recent days.

Life Savers Ministries stirred up a hornet’s nest with its billboard at a mall in Auburn, Ala. that featured a quote from Hitler.

The billboard showed five smiling children and a quote from a speech Hitler gave in 1935 on the Nazi youth movement: “He alone, who owns the youth, gains the future.”

But wait, there’s more!

The billboard even attributed the quote to Hitler.

But wait, there’s even more!

Also on the sign was a Biblical verse from Proverbs: "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it."

Not surprisingly, reaction on social media was swift. The Ledger-Enquirer in Columbus, Georgia reports that the billboard, installed on Friday, was covered on Tuesday and later removed.

James Anderegg, founder of Live Savers Ministries, told the newspaper that his group “certainly never intended to cause confusion. ... We are a children's organization and had honorable intentions and nothing less.”

In hindsight, he said, it probably would have been better to use this quote from Herbert Hoover: “Children are our most valuable resource.”
