Letterman's successor Stephen Colbert made an appearance on the "Late Show" Tuesday, sporting the same suit and tie from Tuesday's "Colbert Report."
Letterman warmly greeted Colbert and expressed his approval of the hire.
"Paul and I have been doing this for a long, long time, and they could have just as easily hired another boob like me. But they didn't..." Letterman said.
"They hired a boob like me," Colbert said.
The Comedy Central host also brought out a Top Ten list from 1997 titled "Top Ten Cocktails for Santa," that he submitted in an application to be a writer for Letterman's show.
"In 1997, you guys were looking for writers and I was gainfully unemployed. I was unemployed at a professional level," Colbert said. "My writing partner and I, Paul Dinello, we submitted a packet to you guys ... and y'all didn't call for four months."
When they finally called, Colbert said, he and Dinello had already started "Strangers with Candy."
The two also took a selfie together, to which Letterman asked, “Is this still what people do?”
"You look good. You look right at home," Letterman told Colbert. "Ladies and gentlemen, here he is: It's the new kid."
