First comes a reality TV show. Then comes love. And then comes marriage.
The unconventional formula worked for Kansas City’s Tanner Tolbert, 28, who proposed to girlfriend Jade Roper, also 28, on Monday’s season finale of “Bachelor in Paradise.”
“What we have is worth so much more than a rose, than a million roses,” Tanner told her during the rose ceremony on a Mexico beach. “I love you, Jade. And I want to keep on loving you for the rest of my entire life. Will you make me the happiest man on earth and marry me?” As fans had been predicting for some time, she said yes.
The two plan to marry next summer in Mexico. And if they follow the precedent set by many other “Bachelor” franchise couples, their wedding will be televised on a future show.
Tanner, a finance manager, chose a 2-carat, emerald-cut Neil Lane engagement ring, with 12 round brilliant-cut diamonds, according to People.com. The magazine also reported that the couple are preparing to live together in Kansas City. Jade is from Los Angeles.
In the beginning of the episode Tanner and Jade shared a fantasy suite date, where he told her he loved all of her “different facets.”
“I love you, Jade, 100 percent. It’s crazy to think about because my mind is saying, ‘What the hell are you doing, Tanner, you haven’t known this person that long.’ But my heart is telling me that the feelings are real and I do love you.”
And Jade told Tanner that she’s often misunderstood, but he gets her.
“I feel like what Tanner and I have is different than anything I’ve ever experienced and that’s what I love about it. It feels romantic and incredible. And it feels like love.”
In “After Paradise,” a followup after the finale, Tanner said his relationship with Jade is even better now than it was during taping in Mexico. The two have been hiding out a lot and sitting on the couch. He joked that he’s kept her “chained up” at his house. Host Chris Harrison revealed that ABC will send them on a weeklong getaway to Mexico.
Jade told People that she and Tanner took their time together on the show seriously. Although they had only known each other for a short time, they had the “hard conversations you have six months into a relationship,” she said. The couple began rooming together by the third night of filming and would sneak in private talks before the producers put mics on them in the morning.
“It does seem crazy,” Tanner said in the interview, “and I thought there was zero chance of this. But when you're there and you spend so much time together from the get-go, three weeks is like nine months of real dating.”
“Janner” is probably the most real (and most adorable) thing to come from “Bachelor in Paradise.” And fans are loving this happy ending.
