It's a big boat, this recession, and apparently we'll have to make room for Playboy bunnies in it.
The news today is that Playboy, hurting in these hard times, is considering publishing the magazine fewer than 12 times a year.
Circulation, now at 2.6 million, and advertising are both dropping off, which has Playboy Enterprises Inc. considering reducing the number of issues it prints as well as raising the $5.99-an-issue cost.
The magazine is already combining its July and August issues into one "double issue" to save money on printing and distribution, which could be a sign of things to come.
(Does this mean we'll have Miss January/February, Miss March/April, Miss May/June?)
These are just some of the "radical changes" up Playboy's sleeve, according toJerome Kern, interim chairman and chief executive who took over when Hugh Hefner's daughter, Christie Hefner
, stepped down at the end of last year.
Playboy's audience has declined in recent years as sources of adult content have increased across the board. The push now is to update the magazine to attract younger readers. Look for a redesign in the June edition.
