It’s a sad week on “Sesame Street.” Sonia Manzano, who plays Maria, has announced that she is retiring after more than 40 years on the beloved PBS children’s series.
Manzano, 65, announced the news on Monday at the annual American Library Association conference in San Francisco.
She joined the show in 1971, portraying Maria, a Puerto Rican teenager. Over the years she married handyman Luis and they had a daughter together. She has been one of the show’s longest-appearing characters.
As a writer on the show, Manzano won 15 Emmys, according to The New York Times.
