Paris Hilton is recovering today from third-degree Twitter burns after people roasted her for suggesting that she and Britney Spears invented the selfie.
“11 years ago today, Me & Britney invented the selfie!” Hilton tweeted on Sunday, along with two selfies taken with Britney Spears.
No you didn’t, people on Twitter quickly responded, pointing out a lot of other celebrities who snapped selfies first — Frank Sinatra, George Harrison and Madonna among them.
Never miss a local story.
Outside of Hollywood, people were snapping selfies, too. Some produced the receipts.
The National Galleries in Edinburgh, Scotland, dug into into its collection to provide photographic proof that selfies existed before Hilton became a reality TV star and ever uttered her famous catchphrase, “That’s hot.”
“This is the first ever photograph selfie in history, taken by Robert Cornelius in 1839. It’s now in the collection of @librarycongress,” the Galleries tweeted.
Kansas City’s Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art retweeted the Galleries with some heat.
