For a second there, actually one hour, it looked like John Oliver might have flown all the way to Russia for nothing when Edward Snowden was late to his scheduled interview with the HBO talk show host.
But Snowden eventually showed up and Oliver aired their conversation Sunday night on “Last Week Tonight.”
What fun to watch Oliver squirm in his chair, sitting across from an empty one, when Snowden showed up late.
Oliver passed the time by stewing.
“A 10-hour flight for an empty chair, I’m gonna lose my (bleep),” he told his camera crew.
When Snowden eventually showed up, more than an hour late, Oliver introduced him in a voice-over as “the most famous hero and/or traitor in recent American history.”
The Snowden bit starts below around the 14-minute mark.
The most troubling bit of news to come of it?
Perhaps Snowden’s answer to this question: Does the government have secret access to Americans’ naked selfies?
Yes, he answered.
