On April Fools Day, Katie Couric took “The Late Late Show” host James Corden’s breath away.
Show guests enter the stage by coming down a set of stairs. So when Corden happily introduces Couric, the curtain pulls away, revealing Couric seemingly fumbling with one of her shoes. Then she takes a step and tumbles — all the way down the stairs.
The audience hushes in a stunned silence (some even try to stop the fall) and Corden rushes over, while uttering a few expletives.
Then Couric appears at the top of the stairs and says, “Up here, up here, James. James: April Fools!”
Turns out she sent a stunt woman down the stairs, who gets up unscathed.
Back at his chair, Corden is still recovering: “I can’t breathe.” He also references how he and his staff had questioned the use of the stairs for guests, so the thought that went through his head was: “Oh. My god. Katie Couric just died.”
According to Corden’s YouTube channel, the prank was “100% real. EVERYONE was in on it except poor James.”
