Beautiful, intoxicating Bali took center stage Monday night on “The Bachelor,” where push finally came to shove for Chris Soules, who found out that one of his three finalists is a virgin.
He was more than ready for the “Fantasy Suite” episode because, as he said at the outset, if he’s going to get down on one knee and propose to someone “I’m going to want to know that the intimacy aspect of it can potentially be there.”
His first date was with Kaitlyn Bristowe, the 29-year-old dance instructor from Vancouver, British Columbia.
The chemistry between these two comes so naturally that they looked like kissy-faced newlyweds as they wandered up and down the streets of Denpasar, Bali. At one point Chris referred to Kaitlyn as his girlfriend to a shopkeeper.
Never miss a local story.
They wrapped sarongs around themselves before going inside a local temple where they participated in a prayerful ceremony and had some fun trying to balance baskets on their heads.
Then came the monkeys. A couple of monkeys walking down the road, lots more in a park area where one of the animals ran straight up Chris’ back and grabbed a banana out of his hand.
(Those wet spots on Chris’ shirt weren’t just sweat. Some of it was monkey pee.)
Later that night Kaitlyn, who has a tendency to shake when she’s nervous, was shaky as they started talking about their feelings for each other. She told him that she really didn’t want to have her emotional guard up around him because “I’m really surprised with how I’m feeling towards you.
“I don’t remember the last time I felt like this. It’s so exciting and so terrifying at the same time.”
Chris confessed that he was “extremely excited for this night not to end.” So was no surprise that when Kaitlyn read aloud the note from host Chris Harrison giving them the option to spend the night together she said, “I can’t imaging saying no to that.”
“Look,” she said. “I’m not shaking anymore.”
She eventually let down her guard low enough to tell him that she is falling in love with him, no matter how terrifying it might be. “But it’s such a good feeling at the same time,” said Kaitlyn.
Chris confessed that she is somebody he could spend the rest of his life with.
Then again, so is Finalist No. 2, Whitney Bischoff, the 29-year-old fertility nurse from Chicago.
For their date they took a boat ride together and if there is one thing this woman is not short on, it’s words. She talks and talks and talks, in a high-pitched, little-girl whine/voice.
She apologized for how her sister refused to give Chris her blessing when he visited Chicago. “There’s no person that I love more but no person who irritates me more,” Whitney whined about her lawyer sister.
They later stripped down to their swimsuits and jumped into the ocean for a swim.
Whitney said she knows how this show is going to turn out. “I feel very confident that I’m going to marry Chris,” she said.
Chris, on the other hand, wasn’t quite as certain that Whitney was willing to move to teeny-tiny Arlington, Iowa to make a life with him.
Later that night he did his best to paint the truest picture of what life in Arlington would be like: Living in a town of about 500 people where there’s little to do, where people have to drive three-and-a-half hours to Chicago to pursue a career.
“I spend a lot of time hanging out at home,” he admitted in a pitch that we’re sure made Arlington’s chamber of commerce very happy.
Whitney, however, was not put off. She is clearly in this to win it.
“Would I look at a map and say, ‘I want to be here with 400 people?’ Probably not,” she said.
But even though she has worked hard to get where she is in her career as a fertility nurse, “I have always wanted to be a wife and to be a mom ... I have this career, but I am not fully happy. I feel like half of me is missing. So in terms of my career, I’ll be honest with you. If I moved to Arlington I would leave that and wouldn’t have any hesitation in that.”
Whitney knows the right things to say. And when she read aloud the invitation to the Fantasy Suite, she didn’t hesitate at all.
“Check please!” she said, ready to go.
“It’s nice to know that I get to spend the entire night with the guy I love,” she said. “I’m ready to be engaged ... and start a life with this man.”
Standing in her way? That would be Finalist No. 3, Becca Tilley, a 26-year-old chiropractic assistant from San Diego.
Chris is falling in love with her, too, but he’s worried that Becca has never felt that way about anyone.
On their date they stopped at a temple where they met the town’s “medium” and were invited by an interpreter to ask him questions.
Becca told the old man that she and Chris had a big date that night and wanted some advice.
“Making love,” was his response to the virgin Becca.
“I like this guy,” sweet, unknowing Chris laughed.
Said Becca: “Chris could be inviting a virgin into the fantasy suite and he has no idea about it.”
Alone together that night Chris told Becca that he was falling in love with her and saw her as someone he could spend the rest of his life with. “You are incredible,” he told her as they kissed.
He was clearly ready to “get to know each other on a whole different level” when he whipped out the invitation for her to spend the night in the Fantasy Suite.
Yeah, about that.
“I really do feel like I’m falling in love with you but I do have something very important to share with you,” she told him, setting him up for The Big Reveal.
“I want you to just like, I want you to be honest with your feelings about it. It’s a big part of who I am. But after having such a good time with you I feel I need to talk about it ...
“But I am a virgin.”
Chris stared blankly, took a deep breath and then struggled to find words, starting and stopping a couple of times before admitting, “It’s never easy to respond to that stuff.
“But I respect that in a lot of ways. And I would be lying if I said that it surprises me. I think it said a lot about who you are. That’s the honest to God truth.”
Becca looked relieved and declared later that Prince Farming’s response “was perfect.”
They spent the night together but the next morning dawned with drama. Cue the video of Becca walking alone on the beach and Chris ruminating about some serious conversation they had. “I feel like I’m more confused than ever because I don’t know where she stands,” he said.
“So I woke up just terrified. I have to consider sending either her or Kaitlyn or Whitney home. All of these people I’m falling in love with. I’m not ready to send any of them home.”
Then he cried and sad piano music played.
The rose ceremony took place inside one of Bali’s most sacred temples, where Chris Harrison told Chris that the only affection allowed was holding hands.
Before the ceremony Whitney gloated she couldn’t believe that Chris had a stronger connection with either of the other women than he did with her.
That confidence was only bolstered when Chris asked Becca if he could talk to her before he handed out the two roses. Whitney could hardly control her happiness because Becca had already expressed concerns that she might be going home.
Becca and Chris sat down alone where Becca finally admitted that she was falling in love with him.
As she waited to find out what was happening Kaitlyn admitted that she couldn’t help but feel happy because she just knew that Chris was saying good-bye to Becca.
When they walked back to the ceremony hand-in-hand, though, Kaitlyn went, “Oh shoot.”
Whitney looked sick, too.
“She can’t be right for him if I’m right for him,” she whined. “She’s young and I think she lacks life experience and I don’t know if she’s ready. As much as I love Becca and I love Kaitlyn, it’s tough to be standing next to the other women.”
She didn’t have to stand there for long.
Whitney got the first rose.
Becca got the second one.
Chris walked a humiliated Kaitlyn out of the temple and to the SUV waiting to cart her away.
“I don’t know if this is the right thing,” he told her.
We don’t know that, either.
So we’re kind of hoping that Kaitlyn gets tapped as the next “Bachelorette.”
