The Brangelina divorce has gotten nasty very quickly.
Just days after Angelina Jolie filed for divorce from Brad Pitt, TMZ reports that an incident aboard their private plane instigated the breakup and that Pitt is being investigated for being verbally abusive and physical with one of their six children.
Sources tell TMZ and People magazine that Jolie, Pitt and some of their children were on the flight last week when Pitt allegedly got drunk.
People reports that Pitt is accused of getting verbally abusive and “physical” with one of the kids.
Witnesses told TMZ that Pitt carried on even after the plane landed and at one point tried to leave the tarmac in one of the airport’s fuel trucks.
According to reports, someone on the plane or on the tarmac anonymously reported the incident to the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family services, which has not confirmed or denied an investigation.
The Los Angeles Police Department is also said to be investigating the incident. But a spokesperson told E! News that police are not investigating allegations of child abuse against Pitt.
In divorce papers filed by Jolie on Monday, the date of separation was given as Sept. 15, the day after the alleged plane incident.
The actress, 41, cited irreconcilable differences. Through her attorney she said the divorce was made “for the health of the family.” She seeks physical custody of the children, with visitation rights for Pitt.
They have six children: Maddox, 15; Pax, 12; Zahara, 11; Shiloh, 10 and 8-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne.
“He takes the matter very seriously and says he did not commit any abuse of his children,” a source close to Pitt told TMZ. “It’s unfortunate that people involved are continuing to present him in the worst possible light.”
In a statement earlier this week Pitt said he was “saddened” by his wife’s decision to seek divorce and asked that the press give the children “the peace they deserve during this challenging time.”
But his plea has fallen on mostly deaf ears. Since Monday paparazzi have declared open season on the Brangelina brood.
In the last few days tabloids have filled pages with stories about how the couple’s parenting styles clashed - she was too permissive, he was the “bad cop” — and their “chaotic” home life with lax rules and neighbors complaining about the kids being loud at all hours of the day and night.
Rumors popped up that Jolie suspected Pitt of cheating on her with French actress Marion Cotillard, his co-star in the upcoming World War II drama, “Allied.”
The chatter became so loud that Cotillard posted a lengthy public statement on Instagram to dispel them.
“I am not used to commenting on things like this nor taking them seriously, but as this situation is spiraling and affecting people I love, I have to speak up,” she wrote.
She confirmed that she is pregnant by her partner of eight years, Guillaume Canet. “He is my love, my best friend, the only one that I need,” she wrote.
“Finally, I do very much wish that Angelina and Brad, both whom I deeply respect, will find peace in this very tumultuous moment.”
