Organizers of the Westport Roots Festival got word this morning that Billy Joe Shaver is ill and has canceled three shows, including Saturday’s performance in Kansas City.
From Shaver’s management: “Billy Joe Shaver has canceled his late May dates to recover from an inner-ear infection, which has made it impossible for him to travel or perform. He will make a full recovery and will tour again surrounding the release of his first new studio album in six years, ‘Long in the Tooth.’ However, his doctors have ordered him to cancel his remaining May shows and rest and recover.”
“Inevitably, with a large event with many bands, issues will arise," festival co-founder Eddie Crane told The Star.
“It's unfortunate that it's a legend like Billy Joe Shaver. We wish him a healthy and speedy recovery, and we're already planning our makeup event with his management. However, the sho must go on and we'll still be kicking ass with the other 26 bands all day long.”
The inaugural Westport Roots Festival begins at noon Saturday and goes on until early Sunday morning.
It will feature more than two dozen bands on three stages: two in the parking lot on Westport Road between Pennsylvania Avenue and Mill Street; and one inside the Westport Saloon.
Shaver was scheduled to perform on the main outdoor stage at 9:30 p.m. Shawn James & the Shapeshifters have been added to the mainstage lineup. Tickets are $28 and will be available at the gate.
