A vast restaurant space and former home of the 810 Zone sports bar and the Canyon Cafe has struggled to find the right tenant. Now Cooper’s Hawk Winery & Restaurants has cut it to a more digestible size by offering several operations in one.

The salsiccia panini at Cupini’s defeats its rivals

Panini are what Cupini’s Italian Restaurant in Westport calls its version of a sub. The salsiccia panini is a savory delight made with house-made mild Italian sausage, spinach and sauteed garlic. It is served hot so it will warm you up when the wind has chilled you out in a bad way.

Café Gratitude serves feel-good food for body and soul

The vegan restaurant Café Gratitude at 333 Southwest Boulevard is the first to put down roots outside the chain's California home base. With dishes named I Am Gorgeous, I Am Whole and I am terrific, such earnestness works only if the food can stand up to the sentiment. And, happily, Café Gratitude is more than just another feel-good dining spot.

Restaurants’ menus are more than just lists of dishes

American food culture has come a long way from the simple menu that lists food items and prices. Today’s menus serve as a connector between the diner, the food and the dining experience, and creating menus with the right look and feel for a particular restaurant is more complicated than reciting a list of ingredients.

Le Monde Bakery curries favor with comfort food

A steaming-hot bowl of soup accompanied by a generous hunk of crusty baguette for $4.97 is a soothing, stick-to-your-ribs repast anytime. When it’s served in a cute neighborhood cafe with a worn checkerboard linoleum floor and glass cases full of buttery French pastries, it’s totally worth driving across the river into old downtown North Kansas City to get it.

Crossroads Social Club is a late-night dining adventure

It’s 11:55 p.m. on a Monday, and most of Kansas City’s restaurants have been put to bed. Winstead’s steakburger is flat-out addictive

Sometimes you can have your steakburger and eat it, too. That’s what Winstead’s offers. Here you have a really terrific burger from a local restaurant with a tradition dating back to 1940 and you can get it 24 hours a day from a drive-through window (at the Plaza location).
