SGT. YORK DAY
Alvin York was a legendary hero of World War I who won a Congressional Medal of Honor.
Gary Cooper was a Hollywood legend who played York on screen and won an Oscar for it.
On Veterans Day Wednesday at the World War I Museum at Liberty Memorial, descendents of these two icons will be on hand. The museum also will celebrate a recent stamp featuring Cooper (he was the 15th inductee into the Legends of Hollywood collectible stamp series) and the 2000 Alvin York stamp.
The free event at 1 p.m. in the museum’s J.C. Nichols Auditorium will feature York’s son, Andrew Jackson York, and Cooper’s daughter, Maria Cooper Janis. They will discuss their famous fathers. It is the first time members of the two families have met.
Also on the program is a screening of “Gary Cooper: American Life, American Legend,” which follows the actor’s life and career.
The event is sponsored by the National Archives at Kansas City and the U.S. Postal Service.
