It’s not too early for the spirit of giving

More News

It’s still September, which means the holidays have begun. E-mails, decorations and sale announcements are all telling me that Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas are almost here.

In addition to the fun, family, food and festivities (and the stress of it all), this time of year is also about charity. Whether donating to the Light the Night Walk to benefit leukemia and lymphoma research or ordering Sonic’s Limeades for Learning to support public school teachers, we can’t forget to give back.

For ideas on how you can spread a little love before the holidays hit for real, check out these events:

•Yappy Hour. On Thursday, do it for the dogs at Tannah’s, 5041 W. 135th St., Leawood. The first Yappy Hour to benefit the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City will be at the Asian fusion restaurant from 5 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance or $30 at the door. You get three drink tickets and appetizers. There will also be music and a silent auction. Visit www.hsgkc.org for more information.

•The Fabulous Event. The Chi Omega Alumnae Association of Greater Kansas City hosts its third annual fundraiser, formerly known as “Lit, Wit and Wine,” to benefit the Make-A-Wish foundation. On Friday, a silent auction at 7 p.m. at Third Eye Productions, 2024 Main St. in Kansas City, pairs a bottle of wine with each item to be sold. I donated Shel Silverstein’s “A Light in the Attic: The Special Edition.” Tickets are $75 a person. There will be complimentary valet parking, food, wine and cocktails. Information: www.fabulousevent-kc.com or e-mail betseysanderson @aol.com.

•It Takes Guts to End Abuse. Beauty Brands stores across the metro area Monday kick off their annual campaign to end domestic violence. The salon and beauty shops will donate all of the proceeds from the sale of Redken Guts volume-boosting spray foam to Safehome, Rose Brooks Center and Hope House, its charitable partners, through Nov. 1. During the campaign, the popular product will be sold for $7.98 (regular retail: $15.98). Find store locations at www.beauty brands.com.

•Views A Rooftop Fashion Show. Standard Style Boutique and Standardsocial.com are known for their sexy annual fashion show, and this year there’s an emphasis on local businesses. The show is from 7 to 10 p.m. Oct. 1 at the Country Club Plaza rooftop parking garage above Standard, 451 W. 47th St. Food by Blanc Burgers and Bottles, Baja 600, Re:Verse and Plaza III; drinks by the 75th Street Brewery and more. Local artists Soft Reeds, Thieves and the Oxfords will perform. Tickets are $30 in advance, $45 at the door. Proceeds benefit the Child Protection Center and the Ronald McDonald House. Information: www.standardsocial. com/views or call 913-685-4464.

•Pilates for Pink 2009. Studio on Main, 123 S. Main, Independence, is one of many pilates studios participating in Shape Magazine’s annual program to fight breast cancer. In October, Studio will host four classes to benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The first class is at 9 a.m. Oct. 10. $10 donation.
