National Book Awards
The finalists for the National Book Awards were announced Wednesday.
In the fiction category: Marcel Theroux’s “Far North,” Colum McCann’s “Let the Great World Spin,” Daniyal Mueenuddin’s “In Other Rooms, Other Wonders,” Jayne Anne Phillips’ “Lark & Termite” and Bonnie Jo Campbell’s “American Salvage.”
Nonfiction: T.J. Stiles; “The First Tycoon” (a biography of Cornelius Vanderbilt), Greg Grandin’s “Fordlandia” (about Henry Ford’s effort to set up a colony in Brazil), Sean B. Carroll’s “Remarkable Creatures: Epic Adventures in the Search for the Origin of Species,” David M. Carroll’s journal of New England wildlife “Following the Water,” Adrienne Mayor’s “The Poison King” (about Greco-Persian ruler Mithradates).
The winners will be announced Nov. 18.
New and notable
“Nick Hornby, whose pop-culture-savvy novels and memoirs have been translated well (‘High Fidelity’ and ‘About a Boy’) and less well (‘Fever Pitch’) into gently acerbic onscreen romantic comedies, has in ‘Juliet, Naked’ written a deceptively breezy novel about a truly vexing question: What do you do with the suspicion that you’ve wasted most of your adult life?”
From a review of Nick Hornby’s “Juliet, Naked” (Riverhead) by Jacob Molyneux in the San Francisco Chronicle.
‘Great Plains’
New this month: “Great Plains: America’s Lingering Wild” (University of Chicago Press) from award-winning nature and wildlife photographer Michael Forsberg of Nebraska.
The Great Plains — from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains — were once second only to the Serengeti among the world’s great grasslands. Today the ecoysystem is among its most endangered.
The book features 150 color pictures, as well as literary, historical and scientific passages. Contributors include novelist Dan O’Brien, geographer and environmentalist David Wishart and American poet laureate Ted Kooser.
