Justin Bieber ran over a paparazzo with his truck Wednesday night after leaving a church service in Beverly Hills, according to police.
The accident happened at 9:24 p.m. outside The City Church in the Saban Theater, Lt. Scott Dowling of the Beverly Hills Police Department told People. The photographer was taken to L.A.’s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
Bystanders snapped photos of the photographer lying on the ground and Bieber laying his hands on him.
Bystanders told entertainment media outlets it was a chaotic scene outside the theater as Bieber tried to drive away through a scrum of photographers.
He made news this week with his sudden announcement on Monday that he’s canceling the rest of his Purpose tour because he “rededicated his life to Christ.” Speculation arose that he might even start his own church.
“Justin slid into his truck in the alley. He got in the driver’s seat and saw all the photographers flashing. He drove out slowly, and there was a group of photographers on the driver’s side and a group on the passenger’s side. Once he drove out, the driver’s side paparazzo started walking around the front of the car. It was like a mob scene, flashing at him,” an eyewitness told E! News.
“The group on the right passenger side got pinned against Kourtney Kardashian’s car, parked on the sidewalk. The guy fell down in the mob — kind of under the front of the car — and the wheel ran over his leg when Justin accelerated. When the photographers stopped flashing and knelt down to help their friend, that’s when Justin realized he hit someone and got out of the car to help.”
Another bystander from the church told E! that a girl from the church started yelling at the paparazzo lying on the ground: “We are here for you! We are praying for you!”
“We don’t need more people yelling here, OK?” Bieber allegedly told her. “That’s nice of you, but we don’t need anybody else yelling, please.”
Some reports suggest Bieber argued with other paparazzi on the scene about how close they get to his truck before turning his attention to the injured photographer.
The singer was cooperative with police when they arrived and stayed on the scene until they finished their investigation. He reportedly was not cited for the incident.
The photographer suffered injuries to his lower body that were reportedly not life-threatening.
Bieber’s rep did not respond to media requests for comment.
