2009 HOLIDAY COOKIE CONTEST RULES

a. The Kansas City Star’s Holiday Cookie contest will begin on September 30, 2009 at approximately 8:00 am Central Time (“CT”) and end on October 19, 2009 at approximately 5:00pm Central Time (“CT”). To participate: To submit your recipe in the contest, clip the official contest registration forms from newspaper ads that appear in The Kansas City Star throughout the entry period or go to The Kansas City Star Company (1729 Grand Blvd., Kansas City, MO 64108), from September 30, 2009 at 8:00 am CT to October 19, 2009 at 5:00pm CT, and pick up an official contest entry form. Enter your first and last name, complete address (including zip code) along with all other requested information on the official contest registration form, attach a copy of the recipe (recipe must be typed or printed legible and complete with ingredients, quantity recipe makes and baking instructions) and submit at The Kansas City Star Company (1729 Grand Blvd., Kansas City, MO 64108) or The Olathe News (514 South Kansas Avenue, Olathe, KS 66061). Entries into the cookie contest may also be mailed to The Kansas City Star, ATTN: Star Magazine Holiday Cookie Contest, 1729 Grand Blvd., Kansas City, MO 64108.

Finalists: On or about October 28, a judging panel will select five (5) finalists per category based on the recipe submissions for that category. Finalists will be judged on their recipe integrity, creativeness and uniqueness. Only entries that include all of the aforementioned entry materials will be considered. Once the five (5) finalists are chosen, The Culinary Center of Kansas City will bake each of the finalist’s recipes from each of the (3) categories on or about November 2, 2009. The winner in each category will be judged on the best overall cookie. Participants are able to enter multiple recipes in multiple categories but are only eligible to win in one category.

Winners: The winner of each category will be notified on or about the afternoon of November 6, 2009. The winner’s names and recipes will be published in the November 26, 2009 edition of The Kansas City Star’s Star Magazine Gift & Goodies section. The winning recipe will be selected based on recipe integrity and best overall cookie. Each winner may be expected to set up an appointment to take a portrait photograph at the main building of The Kansas City Star.

Prizes: Each first-place winner will win a $100 gift certificate from one of the advertisers who participates in the Star Magazine Gifts & Goodies section that appears in The Kansas City Star newspaper on November 26, 2009. Winners will be responsible for communicating their choices to designate by November 27, 2009 by 5pm. Winners will be responsible for picking up their gift certificate the week of November 30-December 4, 2009. Certificates not claimed by 5pm on December 11, 2009 will be forfeited. Eligibility Restrictions: a. The contest is open to any Kansas City Star newspaper reader who is 18 years of age or older. Employees of The Culinary Center of Kansas City or The Kansas City Star Company, McClatchy Co. and their affiliated and subsidiary companies, The Kansas City Star’s independent contractors and their employees, and members of their respective immediate families are ineligible to participate or win.

b. Participants are eligible to enter multiple recipes in multiple categories but are only eligible to win in one category.

c. Recipes will be scrutinized for recipe integrity.

d. All prize certificates may be picked up at the offices of The Kansas City Star Company (1729 Grand Blvd., Kansas City, MO 64108). Any prize certificate not claimed by 5pm on December 11, 2009 will be forfeited by the winner. In the event that a prize certificate is mailed to the winner, it will be with the prior written consent of the winner and therefore, winner assumes the risk of its arrival. The Kansas City Star Company is not responsible for the safe arrival of a prize certificate.

e. Contest prizes are not transferable. Prizes may not be substituted for or redeemed for cash.

f. Decisions of The Culinary Center of Kansas City and The Kansas City Star management with respect to the contest are final.

g. In the event of any ties, the winners will split the prize money.

2. Conditions

a. By participating in the contest, the winners agree to have their name, recipe and likeness used in any advertising material relating to this contest without additional financial or other compensation, and to sign a publicity release confirming such consent prior to acceptance of the prize.

b. Prior to awarding any prize or prize certificate, The Kansas City Star Company or The Culinary Center of Kansas City at their sole discretion may require contest winners to sign a liability release, agreeing to hold The Kansas City Star, The Culinary Center of Kansas City, its corporate licensees, its parent corporations, affiliated companies and the officers, shareholders, directors, employees, agents and representatives of each of them harmless against any and all claims or liability arising directly or indirectly from the prize or participation in the contest.

c. No purchase is necessary. The contest is void where prohibited.

d. Recipes copies are non-returnable.

e. Failure to comply with the contest rules may result in a contestant’s disqualification, at the sole discretion of The Kansas City Star or The Culinary Center of Kansas City.

f.
