Lindsay Crupper, 24: Fox 4 weekend producer
About the employer: Fox 4 is the Kansas City Fox affiliate television station.
My role: I am the weekend producer for the 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. shows on Saturday and Sunday. That means I choose and write the stories, book the guests and decide where the reporters are going to go on assignment. During the week, I am an associate producer, and I help the other producers with their shows.
How long have you been in this position?
Since early May.
How long have you been employed by this company?
Since December. I was hired as a production assistant. Basically, I worked with the camera, teleprompter and lighting. I knew I didn’t want to do that forever, so I started working with the producers, helping write stories.
Did other previous experiences help you prepare for this new role?
I worked for my college television station, in the studio and as an anchor. While in college, I also interned at the NBC affiliate in Milwaukee. Earlier, while I was at O’Hara High School (Kansas City), I interned with Kathy Quinn, then a reporter and anchor at Channel 41.
How does this new position fit into your career?
Becoming a producer always has been a goal of mine. I like how fast-paced it is and how there is always something new to write about. Being a producer is one of the hardest jobs in the news business, but it is also one of the most rewarding.
What was the most important influence in your ability to achieve this particular position?
One of the reasons I got my first job here was because I met John Holt, an anchor at Fox 4, through a part-time job I have as a server at the Royals stadium club. He introduced me to the executive producer, Jana Calkins. After I was hired as a production assistant, I was able to work on stories and, eventually, a producer position opened up. A lot of it was luck and good timing.
What is your educational background?
I have my bachelor’s degree in journalism from Marquette University in Milwaukee (May 2005) and my master’s in journalism from the University of Kansas (May 2008).
