Kyle Christensen, 28: layout specialist
About the employer: Based in Overland Park, Uhlig LLC is an advanced-technology publishing company specializing in varied documents and periodicals. The company, founded in 1990, includes a division called Illustratus, where I work. It is a full-color newsletter service, which allows its subscribers to edit and proof their newsletters online.
My role: Basically, I lay out four-page newsletters for multifamily and senior living communities. Using primarily Publisher and InDesign, I combine various articles — written by both Uhlig staff and subscribers — with images to produce newsletters specific to particular properties.
How long have you been in this position?
Since February.
How did you find your job?
While enrolling in a couple of classes at Johnson County Community College in December, my adviser recommended I stop by the JCCC Job Club, led by Laura Johannesmeyer. I attended one of the meetings and expressed my interest in design and journalism. Laura e-mailed me a few weeks later, telling me about this company, which was hiring for several positions. I applied for a few of the jobs, and then went through a process of proof- and copy-editing tests, along with general knowledge tests. I interviewed with the director of hiring, the newsletter operations manager and both the COO and CEO before being offered the position.
What helped the most in the job search? What didn’t help?
The single thing that worked the most for me was attending the job club. Otherwise, I wouldn’t even have been aware of the company. Other things I believe helped me were holding on to hope; remaining positive; being patient; and focusing on my strengths and interests.
What is your best advice for others in the job search?
Don’t give up, and don’t sell yourself short. Make sure to focus on your strengths.
What is your educational and work experience?
I have a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Kansas (2002), and have worked as an editorial assistant for magazines outside of the Kansas City area.
