How I Got the Job

Posted on Sat, Apr. 05, 2008 10:15 PM

John Christensen, 32: Vice president, trust advisory services

About the employer: St. Louis-based Enterprise Bank & Trust has five branches in the Kansas City area. Enterprise has two divisions — commercial lending and wealth management.

My role: I work one-on-one with clients in all aspects of financial planning, including income tax planning, estate tax planning, educational planning, business succession planning and risk management. I work in the trust advisory group of the wealth management division.

How long have you been in this position?

Since September 2007.

How did you find your job?

I was referred to the trust advisory group by a client. Four interviews later, I had the job. I first interviewed with my current supervisor, the vice president of the trust advisory group. My second and third interviews were with the chairman of the board and the president of the Kansas City region, respectively. Lastly, I met with the CEO and president of the wealth management division, CEO and president of the bank holding company, and a senior vice president.

What helped or didn’t help in the job search?

The main thing was to stay engaged and to continue to network. A friend of mine gave me some good advice about what does not work. He told me the Internet is a placebo, allowing job hunters to feel like they’re doing something when they’re really not. I found this to be true for the professional level of opportunity I was looking for anyway.

Did you reach a low point in this process?

There were definitely times when I would lose focus, but I continued to talk to friends and a network of people.

What is your best advice for others in the job search?

I continually evaluated what I was looking for, homing in on what it was I really most wanted. I looked for the characteristics and opportunity available, not necessarily a “job.”

What is your educational experience?

I have a bachelor’s degree in business administration and economics from Hastings College in Hastings, Neb., and a law degree from the University of Tulsa.
