How I Got the Job

Lyndsey Gewecke, 22: Associated auditor

About the employer: PricewaterhouseCoopers is an international public accounting firm.

My role: As an associate auditor, my role is to check to make sure the company we’re auditing is following regulations. Verifying financial statements — finding the truth behind those financials — provides potential investors with a feeling of comfort and trust. Right now, I focus on auditing mutual fund companies in Kansas City.

How long have you been in this position?

Since September.

How did you find your job?

While interning at the U.S. Department of Defense office in Kansas City the summer between my junior and senior years of college, I received offers to attend “preview days” at some area accounting firms. One of those was PwC. The whole day I spent there was like a job interview. I was able to work with managers. Two to three weeks later, in August 2006, I was called and told I’d be getting a job offer in the mail.

What helped the most in the job search?

Knowing someone helps. In the case of the offer to attend the preview day at PwC, a former college peer and PwC auditor made sure my resume was on the desk of the right people. Also, the people at your college — in my case, Becky Gilmore of the career development office at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kan. — can be of great help. She helped me change my resume and recommended certain job fairs and certain other events. People are there to help; all you have to do is ask.

What is your best advice for others in the job search?

Know you’re being interviewed, but you’re also interviewing them. You have to feel comfortable with the company and the people with whom you’ll be working. It’s not all about the skills on your resume, but the personal working relationships as well.

What is your educational experience?

I received my degrees from Benedictine College — a bachelor’s degree in accounting (December 2006); bachelor’s in finance (May 2007); and a master’s in business administration (May 2007).
