An Overland Park bar and grill and more than 100 of its customers were victims of a sophisticated cyber credit card attack, police said Wednesday.

Overland Park police are encouraging anyone who has used a credit card at Llywelyn’s Pub within the last six months to monitor their statements for fraudulent expenses.

Police have identified more than 100 victims, including the pub’s owner, and they think others could have been victimized as well, spokesman Jim Weaver said.

The Secret Service is investigating the case with the financial crimes team at the Police Department. Any prosecution probably would happen on a federal level.

Police began receiving several credit card fraud complaints on Oct. 21. Investigators quickly deduced that all of the victims had done business with the bar and grill at 6995 W. 151st St.

Investigators think the crimes were the result of a hacker, who managed to gain access to the information between the time of sale and when the information reached the credit card processing company.

Investigators don’t think the credit card processing company was to blame. They also have ruled out any wrongdoing by Llywelyn’s employees.

Even owner Eric Pritchett was a victim. He received a $700 charge from a Florida grocery store. “A member of my family got hit,” he said. “Several of my servers have been hit. My bartender was hit.”

Pritchett said he tried his best to be upfront with customers as soon as he learned what was happening.

“All of my customers have been very sympathetic and understanding and hopeful that it all works out well,” he said.

He said he can only hope that he doesn’t lose customers because of the problem.

“It’s hard to tell,” he said. “Most everybody has assured me that they will continue to come to Llywelyn’s.”

Pritchett said the bar and grill, which has been open since July 2007, installed a new computer server this week. He also sent an e-mail to customers alerting them to the problem and thanking them for their business.

Police are urging patrons of the bar and grill to review their credit card statements. If such expenses turn up, call the Overland Park Police Department at 913-327-6855.
