Sprint Nextel Corp. said Tuesday it planned to trim jobs “in the dozens” from its wholesale division amid slowing business.
The Overland Park-based wireless provider has begun notifying employees in the division of layoffs, said Kathleen Dunleavy, a company spokeswoman.
Dunleavy would not say how many jobs are being cut, other than it would be “in the dozens” and “fewer than 100.”
The division employs 575 people, mostly in the Kansas City area.
Dunleavy said there was not a timeline yet for termination dates.
“We’re still working out those details,” she said.
Most of the cuts are coming from traditional wireline and Internet-based telephone operations.
“Those are more traditional, established areas of the business,” Dunleavy said. “They are not as resource-intensive as they once were.”
She said those areas have less growth potential compared with areas of business, such as wireless services.
