Country club caught up in foreclosure battle says it’s found a buyer in Topeka

More News

The Brookridge Country Club, caught up in a foreclosure battle with a former development partner, has found a friendly prospective buyer in Topeka.

Members of the club at Interstate 435 and Antioch Road in Overland Park are scheduled to vote soon on a plan to sell the property and its 27-hole golf course to GreatLife Golf & Fitness. GreatLife operates seven golf clubs and fitness centers, including two in the Kansas City area, Maple Creek and River Oaks.

Matt Sargent, president of the Brookridge board, said the tentative deal with GreatLife would allow the 50-year-old golf club to continue operating and add a full-service fitness center in space currently used for banquets. If approved by members, the transaction is to close before the end of the month.

“This plan provides good-will money to members but, more importantly, keeps Brookridge open as a private golf course with the service level we’ve known,” Sargent said.

A proposed merger between Brookridge and Meadowbrook Country Club collapsed last summer when foreclosure proceedings were brought against Brookridge by Alsation Land Co. Club members accused Alsation of reaching a deal with Bank Midwest to buy the loans on their property.

A sale to GreatLife should help resolve claims associated with the foreclosure, said attorney Scott Beeler, a Brookridge club member.

“We are certainly a ways down the road towards making that happen,” he said, adding that he hoped there would be “a happy ending.”
