Mailing the very best

Hallmark cards are being sold in post offices across the country in a one-year trial. About 500 locations are getting the cards, from Hallmark’s Sunshine Greeting line, and an additional 1,000 locations will get them early next year. In the Kansas City area, the post offices at 6029 Broadmoor St. in Mission and 12433 Antioch Road in Overland Park are among the trial locations, and more could be among the locations added next year. If the program goes well, it could be extended another year under its initial contract. The Sunshine subsidiary, based in Bloomington, Ind., has a sister company that already provides mailing supplies to the Postal Service for sale at post offices.

Not looking good

Doubts are growing about whether the Ford pact with the United Auto Workers will be approved after the rank and file at two more plants in Michigan overwhelmingly rejected it Thursday and workers in Louisville, Ky., and Dearborn, Mich., cast ballots Friday. Ford’s biggest assembly plant, at Claycomo, has already voted 92 percent against the concessions, which Ford says it needs to stay competitive. At least eight UAW locals representing 12,500 workers have voted down the deal, many overwhelmingly. Only about four locals with a total of 7,000 members have favored the pact. More plants will vote over the weekend.

Blue adieu

Wal-Mart, Kroger and some other grocers said Friday that they were suspending business with a large southwestern Michigan blueberry grower after investigators found children as young as 6 working in the grower’s fields. The retailers said, pending further information, that they have stopped buying products from Adkin Blue Ribbon Blueberry Co. near South Haven, about 45 miles southwest of Grand Rapids. Michigan is the nation’s largest blueberry producer, with 110 million pounds harvested in 2008. New Jersey was second last year at 42 million pounds.
