The Cold Weather Rule, meant to prevent the disconnection of utility service needed to provide heat during cold weather, will go into effect Sunday in Kansas and Missouri.
The rule, which covers investor-owned utilities, including Missouri Gas Energy, Kansas Gas Service, Atmos Energy, Westar Energy and Kansas City Power & Light, will last throughout the winter.
The rule differs slightly in the two states. For example, disconnection is prohibited in Kansas when forecasts call for temperatures below 35 degrees, and in Missouri when temperatures below 32 degrees are expected. Most customers are required to pay any past-due amount over a year’s time, plus the current monthly bill to maintain service. The rule applies only to residential customers.
For more information, call 800-662-0027 in Kansas or 800-392-4211 in Missouri.
