With fewer public companies in area, Star 50 shrinks

Forget what the science books say — the universe is shrinking. It is at least for the Star 50*. This is our 21st annual ranking of publicly traded companies based in Kansas and Missouri outside the St. Louis area. For the first time we can’t find 50 companies to rank. There are 49, hence the asterisk to this year’s package.

For the fourth time in 21 years, a Star 50* winner has managed to repeat. No. 1 O’Reilly Automotive Inc. rode its growing sales of auto parts to professional and do-it-yourself mechanics, as well as a size-boosting merger, to its first-place finish a year ago.

How Star 50* ranks companies

The Star 50* annual ranking of the region’s public companies enters its third decade with this year’s publication. From its inception in 1991 through 2000, Star 50* compared companies in four categories: revenues, return on equity, increase in income, and profit increase as a percent of revenues.
