Studio Movie Grill, based in Dallas, is planning an upscale, eight-screen “movie grill” concept. More than just coffee is brewing at popular shops around the city. For many businesspeople, the local coffee shop has become a second office. “I have found that it’s pretty common for people to use Homer’s as an office away from their office,” said Glenn Winkler, manager of Homer’s Coffee House in Overland Park. “Several of them work at home and like to come in and see people, and others just like to get out of their cubicles.”

Loan initiative Missouri businesses with five employees or fewer may apply for loans for between $2,500 and $25,000 as part of the new Missouri Small Business Loan Program. The loans typically will be repaid over 10 years at an interest rate of 3 percent, the state said. Applications are online at www.ded.mo.gov/Moloan/index.htm

Small-business owners might want to put two important items at the top of their midyear to-do lists: get a financial checkup and do more networking. Early July is a good time for owners to plan for the rest of the year. But the recession has chilled many companies’ plans to expand or make big capital expenditures. And many owners have done as much cost-cutting as they can to help their companies weather the poor economy.
