Nurses at Lee’s Summit Medical Center vote to remove union as bargaining agent

Nurses at Lee’s Summit Medical Center voted to remove their union as bargaining agent, but the results will be contested. In an election held over two days last week, 68 nurses voted to remove a unit of the California Nurses Association while 59 voted to retain it, said Dan Hubbel, regional director of the National Labor Relations Board.

Two HCA Midwest hospitals will hold nurse bargaining elections

In the next month, the two remaining HCA Midwest hospitals with union-represented nurses will hold elections intended to remove the bargaining unit. Lee’s Summit Medical Center, which has about 150 nurses, will hold its decertification election Thursday and Friday. The 272 nurses at Menorah Medical Center in Overland Park are scheduled to vote Nov. 19 and 20. Both elections will be conducted by the National Labor Relations Board.

Ford workers to vote on more concessions

Union workers at Ford Motor Co.’s Claycomo plant will decide Sunday whether to accept another round of concessions the automaker says are needed to remain competitive. Unlike previous cost-cutting proposals, including one approved earlier this year, some observers wonder whether Ford’s production employees will agree to swallow another bitter pill. Many in the Ford work force have continued to be angry since August, when Ford brought up the proposal to reopen the 2007 national contract with the United Auto Workers.

Lafarge North America’s Sugar Creek cement plant plans 10-week layoff

About 40 employees at Lafarge North America’s Sugar Creek cement plant will be laid off for 10 weeks during a shutdown of its kiln. The temporary furlough for those union workers will begin Nov. 2, said Steve Kidwell, a Lafarge spokesman in Sugar Creek.
