Boy recovers from snake bite at KC soccer game — his team: Venom

A 10-year-old member of a traveling youth soccer team is recovering from a snake bite between games Sunday at Swope Park. His team’s name? Venom. On Tuesday, before leaving for their home near Branson, Carlton Epps and his parents re-lived the experience, praised the hospital staff and noted the importance of being prepared for emergencies.

Filed by a former altar boy, the lawsuit alleges that the diocese failed to supervise a priest who repeatedly abused him. The Kansas City Star published a three-day series in December 2011 called “The Altar Boys’ Secret” that told the story of Jon David Couzens and the three other altar boys.

Chris Bartholomew Softball Tournament honors a son lost in the crossfire

The mother of murder victim Chris Bartholomew has created a scholarship in his name for students aspiring to careers in criminal justice. Misty Kirwan and her son used to play softball together, and an tournament raises money for the effort. Barholomew, a Gladstone resident, was caught in crossfire seven years ago when violence erupted near Westport.

Birds win in fight over wind farm near northwest Missouri wildlife refuge

Oregon-based Element Power’s has dropped its $400 million plan to build Missouri’s largest wind farm in Holt County. It had been criticized from the beginning because of the site’s proximity to the Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge near Mound City. Opponents feared a slaughter if migratory birds flew into the 350-foot-high turbines.
