Is there a way out of our nation’s two-party stranglehold?

Congressional gridlock — and its pandering to special interests and hyperpartisan divisions — will never be resolved by Democrats and Republicans alone. A new political book argues that the leverage of independent candidates is necessary to get government working again.

Have you tried a Meat Pickle?

Last month, Brett Atkinson, owner of Wilma’s, brought his latest invention to The Star’s kickoff Food Truck Friday event. At first Atkinson called it a Reverse Engineered Cheeseburger, or Meat Pickle. It was the latter name that stuck and spawned #MeatPickle — as suggested by @FeastMiller. You can try a Meat Pickle and other edible inventions during Food Truck Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. May 6 in The Kansas City Star’s parking lot at the corner of 17th and McGee. Video by Tammy Ljungblad.
