Air crash that killed 2 from Leawood still raises safety issues

Two passengers from Leawood were among the 49 killed on Aug. 27, 2006, when a Comair plane took off from the wrong runway in Kentucky and crashed. Despite a decade of technological advancements, 3-D “synthetic vision systems” in airline cockpits have yet to be fully approved by the FAA; they’re still uncommon in large commercial airliners. Pilots say similar systems could avert such tragedies.
