Who knew you could learn so much from the sets of the new “Melrose Place”?
We didn’t until we spoke with Michelle Williams, a publicist for the original “Beverly Hills, 90210” who is now an interior designer with Michelle Williams Interiors in Riverwoods, Ill. Williams dissected the style of the television show.
•The “Melrose” look: The architecture in the apartments includes arched doorways like many of Kansas City’s Tudor Revivals in Waldo and Brookside. The furnishings are mod with a little Hollywood glam.
“It’s young, fun, hip and very L.A.,” Williams says. “I love that mix.”
•How to achieve “M.P.” style: Mirrored furniture is key.
“Mirrored pieces are timeless,” she says. “They’ve been popular since the 1920s. I had a client who at first thought a mirrored coffee table was gaudy, but now it’s her favorite piece.”
•How to make a small space bigger: Limit the color palette of furniture and accessories to two to three colors like the show sets.
“It unifies the space and adds a lot of wow factor,” Williams says. “Using mirror on the wall and furniture adds twice as much light, twice as much space.”
•Splurge vs. steal items: Some of the lamps are by Jamie Young and can cost up to $1,000.
“Scour places like CB2, Crate & Barrel and Anthropologie, which all have lamps that offer a lot of bang for the buck,” Williams says. “You can also buy a lamp from Target, then go to a lighting store to add a black lacquer shade for a custom look.”
The cast of characters in the new “Melrose Place” have changed, but the iconic building and pool at 4616 Melrose seen in the 1992 prime-time soap haven’t. The show is at 8 p.m. Tuesdays on CW.
