Suspensions open the door for matchup play

More News

Perhaps it’s just me, but there’s now way I’m getting in trouble if I worked for NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. My background has a lot to do with it since accountability is pounded into heads early in basic training, but I can’t help but remain baffled each time I hear of player transgressions.

Professional athletes, whether they like it or now, live in glass houses. If the last year of suspensions to Michael Vick, Chris Henry, Adam Jones and even Kansas City’s own Larry Johnson failed to serve notice, the past week’s season-ending carnage opened eyes for:

Giants WR Plaxico Burress

Saints RB Deuce McAllister

Saints DE Will Smith

Saints DE Charles Grant

Vikings DT Pat Williams

Vikings DT Kevin Williams

Texans C Bryan Pittman

I can sense you wondering what this has to do with fantasy, so here we go.

Most who drafted Burress are finally happy they won’t have to deal with his bust of a season where he caught 35 passes for 454 yards and four TDs. With Burress out of the way, the Giants turn to Domenik Hixon, who has 11 catches for 128 yards the last two games. Meanwhile, also upgrade veteran Amani Toomer, who has nine catches for 115 yards and two scores in the same span.

There’s a concern the Giants could shut it down at some point the next four weeks should they clinch home field advantage, but there are intriguing spots and potential shootouts on the horizon against the Cowboys and Panthers in Weeks 15-16.

The Saints will miss Smith and Grant on defense, but most wonder about McAllister’s impact. While the Saints lose a good goal line threat, I can only hope you weren’t depending on him or the Saints defense to begin with. RBs Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas, who has four TDs the last three games, offer more bang for the buck the rest of the way. Moreover, you won’t have to worry about McAllister vulturing a score against the Falcons in Week 14 and the Lions in Week 16.

Still, the biggest impact is in Minnesota where the vaunted “Williams Wall” struck fear in numerous hearts when it came to gauging weekly RB matchups, especially during these critical weeks where matchups are everything. While a Minnesota judge on Wednesday issued a temporary restraining order blocking the league’s four-game suspension, their status for Sunday’s game against the Lions remains in the air.

With an intact Williams Wall, RBs Kevin Smith, Tim Hightower, Michael Turner and Brandon Jacobs may have sunk championship goals in the coming weeks. If Minnesota is without their elite duo, green light all those RBs and enjoy Turner in your Week 16 Super Bowl.

Speaking of Smith, he’s set to anchor championship runs despite Detroit’s woes. The biggest question is Week 14’s matchup against Minnesota because I don’t like him if the temporary restraining order allows the Vikings to deploy the “Williams Wall.” But you have to love Weeks 15-16 against the Colts and Saints, both bad run defenses.

Suspensions the last year are an unfortunate part of the game. However, for our purposes, the door is wide open for you to capitalize on matchups with secondary players during this critical time.

Tracking key injuries

Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger tweaked a knee in Wednesday’s practice and did not finish. Here we go again.

Redskins RB Clinton Portis (neck) did not practice Wednesday and his lack of practice time the last three weeks is alarming. While he’s been able to play through an assortment of injuries before being in and out of the lineup last week against the Giants with his current injury, Sunday’s game against the Ravens is brutal.
