That freedom must be earned, and the coaching staff believes Johnson, 31, deserves it. “He’s a great player, time tested,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “I’ve been lucky enough to be around some great players, and … when you need a play, they somehow make a play. He’s done it year after year.”

Kansas State juniors Ryan Mueller and Tyler Lockett won Big 12 individual awards handed out by the league’s coaches Wednesday. Mueller, a St. Thomas Aquinas grad from Leawood, was chosen defensive lineman of the year, while Lockett won special teams player of the year.

Kansas freshman center Joel Embiid joined three other freshmen in the starting lineup Tuesday, giving KU four freshmen starters for the first time in school history.
