Philadelphia, July 13 – The argument over efforts to write a little more “new dealism” into the speech Gov. Phil M. Donnelly prepared to place the name of President Truman in nomination at the Democratic convention ended today with the governor the victor.
It was understood that John M. Redding of the publicity department of the national committee had sought to put “more life” and an espousal of the late President Roosevelt and his policies into the speech….
…The revised text, which was rejected by Donnelly, also would include more of an espousal of civil rights, the troublesome subject now before the platform committee.
The suggested change included paying tribute to Mr. Roosevelt for the governmental changes which he had instituted, but with which Mr. Donnelly was not in full accord….
…It is no secret that the governor and Mr. Truman have not been the closest of friends. While the feeling is not sharp, there is no particular affection….
