A tribute to the Jayhawks, in rhyme

By DON MUNDAY
The Kansas City Star

So many teams at tournament,

Across the college firmament!

But path to peak is steep and long

Where teams must prove that they belong;

Yet Jayhawks charted such a course

And left their fans quite mostly hoarse

As team joined ranks with storied corps:

All Number Ones, these Final Four!

The task in retrospect is shown,

To carve a path to San Antoin’:

Of leaving Portland State perplexed,

Then Vegas team that surfaced next;

With ’Nova crew the next to drop,

And Davidson had hoped to stop

The Kansas surge, but end result

Would let the KU fans exult ...

A trip to famous Final Four,

To knock upon a rival’s door

Where Carolina met its match

(That’s yet another team dispatched!)

And finally, with all that past,

To face the Memphis team at last.

With what result, you maybe ask?

Were Jayhawks up to title task?

Why, surely, friend, you must have heard

The joyous news that just occurred!

They’ll spin the yarn in ages come

About this team that title won;

So cancel classes! Homework, shun!

The students, fans, ’most everyone

Parade their joy — no need to wait —

This year of years, Two-Thousand Eight!

So go tell Grandma! Go tell Gramps!

The only word for ’Hawks is ... champs!
