KU fans go to great heights to see Jayhawks
Those sections were advertised as “distant view seats” when fans bought them.
Apparently, that sounded more enticing than “Seats in Santa Fe.” This was the upper corner of the Alamodome, on the opposite end from the court, behind the giant blue curtain that cut the arena in half.
In fact, the seats were so pathetic that fans actually were grateful they were so high, otherwise they couldn’t have seen over the monster curtain.
From this view, the players looked 2 inches tall. KU’s Sherron Collins, even shorter.
Duane Graber of Kansas City dropped $295 on his distant view seat (he got in both Saturday and Monday on one ticket). Big bucks, especially considering his direct sightline consisted of nine television trailers and the media work room behind the curtain.
“I don’t care,” said Graber, who estimates the trip will cost him more than $1,000. “I just wanted to attend one Final Four. The atmosphere here is just great.”
Steve Russell of Topeka also settled into his seat on the moon — aka section 331.
He made the trip with his brother, driving 13 hours with a snooze stop in north Texas. They bought their tickets for $373 on eBay and he expects to drop $1,300 on the entire trip.
“First time we walked in here and saw the blue curtain, I was (angry),” Russell said. “But it’s not that bad. I’m here. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime deal.”
